What is gastric bypass?
Gastric bypass is a type of weight loss surgery that alters the size of your stomach and its connection to your small intestines to help you eat less and absorb fewer calories so you can lose weight. It’s one of the most frequently performed weight loss procedures in the United States.
Gastric bypass is also sometimes referred to as laparoscopic gastric bypass or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Dr. Mutafyan is a skilled surgeon and, when possible, performs gastric bypass surgery laparoscopically to minimize incisions and pain.
Am I a good candidate for gastric bypass?
Dr. Mutafyan determines if you’re a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery after a bariatric surgery consultation. Dr. Mutafyan is a top-rated weight loss surgeon but always begins with a nonmedical approach so he can understand the reason you’re seeking surgery.
You may be considered a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery if:
- You have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above
- You have a BMI between 35-40 with obesity-related conditions
- You’re in good general health
Dr. Mutafyan conducts a comprehensive physical exam and reviews your medical and weight history, as well as your lifestyle habits and personal struggles with weight before gastric bypass surgery is recommended.
How is gastric bypass performed?
Dr. Mutafyan performs your gastric bypass surgery in two stages. He first divides your stomach into two sections, one small and one large. The smaller pouch, which is about the size of a golf ball, serves as your new stomach, and the larger portion is bypassed.
Because your new stomach is so small, it allows you to fill up fast so you eat less and consume fewer calories to help you lose the weight. After your new small pouch is separated from your stomach, it’s reattached to your small intestine.
Dr. Mutafyan performs your gastric bypass surgery as an outpatient procedure.

How much weight can I lose after gastric bypass surgery?
The amount of weight you lose following your gastric bypass surgery depends, but most patients can expect to lose up to 60% of their weight within two years of the surgery. Dr. Mutafyan and his team work closely with you to help you make the necessary diet and lifestyle changes to achieve your weight loss goals and prevent complications, such as chronic heartburn and nutritional deficiencies.
