What are varicose and spider veins?
Varicose and spider veins are visible veins that appear under your skin. Varicose veins appear as thick, gnarled veins that may create a bumpy road map, while spider veins tend to only cause blue or red lines.
You may develop varicose or spider veins if the valves in your veins have been damaged, allowing the blood to pool and create the visible veins. While you can develop varicose veins on any part of your body, they most commonly appear on the legs.
These veins don’t always cause problems, but they can affect blood flow and lead to pain or aching. Dr. Mutafyan offers sclerotherapy to get rid of your varicose and spider veins.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a special injection used to treat spider and varicose veins. The injection contains a chemical that irritates the lining of the affected blood vessel, causing it to close off the flow of blood so the unsightly vein disappears.
Am I a good candidate for sclerotherapy?
Dr. Mutafyan determines if you’re a good candidate for sclerotherapy during a consultation. If you’re generally in good health, not pregnant, and don’t have any blood-clotting issues, then you may be considered a good candidate for the procedure.
What happens during sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is an in-office procedure that takes less than an hour to complete. After cleaning your skin with alcohol, Dr. Mutafyan injects the chemical into the affected vein. You may feel a stinging sensation during the injection. If you’re sensitive to pain, be sure to let Dr. Mutafyan know so he can adjust your treatment to minimize discomfort.
Depending on your needs, Dr. Mutafyan may place a number of injections during your treatment session. There’s no downtime following your sclerotherapy, so you can go back to your usual activities afterward.
To support the healing process, Dr. Mutafyan recommends you wear compression stockings for up to two weeks after your procedure.

LET US HELP YOU DECIDE WHICH PROCEDURE IS BEST FOR YOU
ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT
Another minimally invasive procedure, microphlebectomy is a method used to for varicose vein treatment. There are two main categories of microphlebectomy treatment: ambulatory and Trans-illuminated powered phlebectomy.
Following the procedure, the patient is fully able to engage in physical activities, including walking and climbing stairs.
ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT
EVLT® differs from vein surgery and, in various ways, is a more desirable method for the treatment of varicose veins. Endovenous Laser Treatment is a minimally invasive, in-office procedure and, unlike other surgical methods, only requires small doses of local anesthetics.
EVLT® also allows a shorter recovery time and the results of the procedure are commonly similar or better than other forms of surgery.
SURGICAL LIGATION AND STRIPPING
Compared to other procedures, surgical ligation and stripping is a more invasive varicose vein treatment technique.
The treatment involves tying off and removing the GSV, or great saphenous vein. The GSV is a large vein that runs from the ankles, up the inner leg and thigh, and stops at the femoral vein, found in the groin.
SCLEROTHERAPY
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure intended for the treatment and removal of both spider and reticular veins.
During this in-office treatment, our California Surgical Specialty Medical Group will inject a solution, known as a sclerosant, into the troublesome vein, causing them to dissolve, collapse, and fade from view.
COMPRESSION THERAPY
Compression therapy is one of the first lines of defense against varicose veins, often suggested by phlebologists before turning to more invasive methods to treat venous disorders.
Compression stockings are designed to squeeze the legs and put pressure on the muscles and veins to aid in proper circulation. This form of varicose vein treatment is usually inefficient and often ineffective in resolving varicose vein development.
